Tips for Adjusting to Higher Altitudes

Keystone’s mountain air is refreshing and energizing - but the elevation is much higher than most people are used to. At 9,200 feet above sea level, the thinner air has less oxygen, which can affect your body until it adjusts. Most people do fine with a little preparation. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:

Hydration Is Key

  • Drink more water than usual - start before you travel and continue throughout your stay.

  • Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you and make symptoms worse.

  • Bring a reusable water bottle to keep with you on hikes and around the lodge.

Rest and Pace Yourself

  • Give your body a day or two to adjust - avoid strenuous activity right away.

  • Walk and hike at a slower pace than you would at home.

  • Get plenty of sleep so your body can recover as it acclimates.

Fuel Your Body

  • Eat balanced meals with complex carbs and lean protein to keep your energy steady.

  • Keep healthy snacks on hand (nuts, fruit, granola).

  • Avoid heavy, greasy meals that can slow you down at altitude.

Sun and Weather Protection

  • The sun is stronger at high altitude - wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

  • Dress in layers: mornings and evenings can be chilly even when days are warm.

Listen to Your Body

  • Common symptoms of altitude include headache, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

  • Rest if you need to. Most symptoms ease within 1–2 days.

  • If you feel severe nausea, dizziness, or persistent shortness of breath, seek medical help.

Gentle Self-Care

  • Try light stretching, yoga, or mindful breathing to support your body.

  • Remember that your body is working harder—be kind and patient with yourself.

  • Stay connected: let someone know if you don’t feel well.
